The Different Types & Forms of Bullion
Bul · lion /ˈbo͝olyən/
noun
gold or silver in bulk before coining, or valued by weight. “gold bullion”
Bullion refers to a precious metal like gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and rhodium in bulk form that is valued by its weight in either troy ounce or grams. Bullion comes in different forms, there are bullion coins, bars, ingots, and rounds. People buy precious metals because they are a permanent asset and a sound long term investment as values tend to increase over time. The smaller the weight, the more costly the bullion is to produce, resulting in a higher premium for smaller denomination bullion. Whenever prices are low, smart investors buy larger quantities of precious metal bullion.
Bars & Ingots
A bar will be marked with its weight and purity. Bullion bars are valued exclusively based on the content of the precious metal.
Ingots refer more to the shape of casted metal and can apply to both precious & non-precious metals.
Rounds
The value of a bullion round is based solely on its precious metal content. Bullion rounds are for collection, not for circulation, and have no currency value.
There are many ways to buy and own gold. Coins and small bars offer a popular option for investing in precious metal. Gold bullion coins are used as an alternative form of wealth storage to traditional currency. The attraction of gold bullion coins is that they retain near full value regardless of either change of government or being transported outside their country of issue.

Platinum is considered an industrial metal. The automotive industry utilizes platinum in automotive catalysts to minimize the harmful effects of emissions. After the auto industry, jewelry accounts for the majority of platinum demand. Platinum is also used by the petroleum and chemical refining industries, in addition to the computer industry. Platinum mines are heavily concentrated in South Africa and Russia exclusively.
Like gold and silver, platinum is traded around the clock on global commodity markets. Platinum tends to fetch a higher price than gold during routine periods of market and political stability simply because it is much rarer than gold.

Palladium is a highly rare precious metal with even smaller above-ground physical supplies than silver, gold, and platinum. Like platinum, palladium is a lustrous, silver-white metal. It has many of the same applications. The largest application is in automobile catalytic converters, with smaller uses in jewelry, dentistry, surgical instruments, and electronics. Palladium investing is a relatively new phenomenon when compared to the history of silver or gold. Palladium is a great way to diversify a bullion holding.

Rhodium is a more volatile investment than other precious metals. However, Rhodium investing can be extremely rewarding for precious metals investors if they buy and sell Rhodium at the right time. Due to its scarcity, Rhodium prices have been as high as $10,000 / Oz within the last 20 years, but are susceptible to large fluctuations in price.
